Track: MedTech Mornings: Medical 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing
Vault Recording: TBD
There are 7 distinct additive manufacturing processes as defined by ASTM. In recent years, technical innovations have expanded beyond these original seven processes as well as blurred the lines between them. With hundreds of companies offering 3D printers, printable materials, related equipment, and specialized software, navigating the industry and its performance claims is a task in itself. This talk will provide an analytical approach to interpreting specifications for the more common technology categories and commentary around unspoken weaknesses and limitations in relation to medical 3D printing. For example, what implantable medical device characteristics are achievable with any of today’s 3D printing technology categories? Additionally, the current challenges facing the broader industrial 3D printing workflow are discussed with commentary on how they may be overcome looking forward. Specific cases in materials biocompatibility, post-processing, quality control, and economic viability demonstrate why directly printing medical devices has yet to displace other manufacturing methods as the industry standard.
