Alex Tongue has been working with fiber optics and 3D shape sensing technology since 2012. After his start with the technology at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, he transitioned to the commercial side of fiber optics and focused on bringing Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry-based fiber optic sensing solutions to market. Since this transition, Alex has spearheaded the research and development of 3D shape sensing solutions. He has been a part of a variety of projects focused on biomechanics, orthopedics, as well as vascular, pulmonary, and gastro-intestinal procedures. He now serves as the technical leader of The Shape Sensing Company, focused on integrating the technology into the next generation of medical devices
